Support Network Baghdad

At the end of 2002, APN warned, that a war would have severe consequences for the already suffering population.

Therefore we started establishing depots for food, drinking water, and medicines, and founded our support network Baghdad together with the French organization »Enfants du Monde / Droit de l’Homme« (EMDH), back in December of 2002. Thanks to our preparations we were able to supply many poor families and street kids with food and medication during the war.

At the beginning of April 2003, Baghdad was conquered by American troops, which resulted in terrible looting of hospitals and official buildings. Medical support collapsed completely and thousands of sick people could not be treated properly.

Thanks to our stored medical supplies we were the first support group which was able to open an ambulant hospital and treat more than 400 people per day. On December 13th, 2003, during the broadcast »Ein Herz für Kinder« (A Heart For Children), German TV correspondent Ulrich Tilgner stated that he was truly impressed that only four days after the occupation of Baghdad, APN managed to operate its day clinic in Saddam City (now called Sadr City). While other hospitals had to be shut down and wounded had to be moved to other locations because of the looting, our physicians were able to work even under the worst conditions. (link to TV report ZDF-Heute Journal, broadcasted on April 13th, 2004). Only two weeks later we opened a second ambulant hospital in the slums of Hay Tarik.›››

Since then, the Iraqi physicians in our two hospitals provide basic medical support for 500 to 600 people daily.

70% of the patients are children and juveniles. Until we opened the two hospitals, there was no medical treatment available in these parts of the city, which belong to the poorest quarters in Baghdad.

The most common diseases to be treated to are: diarrhea, typhus caused by dirty water, and skin and lung diseases caused by the disastrous hygienic conditions. There are also cases of tuberculosis.

In particular children are at great risk. After years of malnourishment, their immune system is weak. Diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia are the most common causes of death among children.

We will replace the current emergency hospital in Hay Tarik with a new hospital building hospital, funded by the campaign »Ein Herz für Kinder«‚ (A Heart For Children).
