Many people have no access to medical care.
APN is rebuilding 50 hospitals in Baghdad and vicinity.
In the late 1980ies, Iraq had one of the most modern infrastructures and the highest standard of living in the Middle East. The Country’s health system was state-of-the-art with hospitals and modern facilities built to western standards. Medical care was free of charge and available for 97 % of the urban population and 78 % of the rural population. Primary Health Care Stations (PHCS) provided initial treatment of patients, vaccinations, and general medical care. Hospitals treated severe illnesses. At the beginning of the 90’s, due to the embargo, health care budgets had to be cut down to 5 to 10% of previous years’ budgets. Since 1991, no more repairs and maintenance of hospitals and PHCSs were performed. Besides the lack of medicines, the lack of drinking water and frequent power outages led to a continual collapse of the health care system. We rehabilitate and rebuild 50 of the ambulant health care stations in Baghdad and vicinity. Within this project APN is a contractual partner of the English organization »Merlin« (London). Merlin is responsible for medical issues and is also supplying PHCSs with medicines and medical equipment.
