APN planned and built three water treatment plants and installed 10 kilometers of water pipes. As a result, 17,0000 people have now access to clean drinking water.

Clean water for 17,000 people

APN’s second project in Iraq was the rehabilitation of the water treatment plant and the installation of new water pipes in the Anbar region.

The work started in 2002, but was interrupted for two months due to the war.

Because of the wars and the UN-sanctions the water supply system collapsed, which was the reason that only 50 percent of the urban population and 33 percent of the rural population had access to drinking water in 2001. Epidemics such as malaria, typhus, and cholera – which previously had been successfully contained – returned, and are widespread today.

The Anbar region is located about 200 km northeast of Baghdad, on the river Euphrates. Many villagers get their water from the river, which in many places resembles a cloaca. Wealthy people are using water pumps, but nobody filters or boils the water before using it.
